New House Builder | Affordable Alternatives to Ikea

 new house builder
New House Builder | Whether you’re desperately seeking a new couch, a rug, or even just a chrome-plated toilet brush holder, chances are pretty darn good that you have, at some point, headed to the nearest Ikea for your home furnishing needs. Like it or not, this Swedish furniture megachain has perfected the art of creating affordable, modern designs for the masses.
But maybe you’ve had one too many meltdowns trying to piece together your “flat pack” design. Or maybe your birch veneer Billy bookshelf spontaneously collapsed. Perhaps you’re tired of trudging through those meandering store paths to find one light bulb, or crave a different inexpensive aesthetic. Or maybe you just don’t like Swedish meatballs.
Whatever the reason for your Ikea fatigue, know that these days, there are plenty of alternatives out there—furniture and home decor outlets that are just as friendly on the wallet but also deliver style and quality without giving you an assembly migraine. So before setting out once again to the Big Blue, browse, click, and consider the following:

For furniture …

A new company called Greycork will ship you a box containing a whole Ikea-esque living room set (sofa, chaise, coffee table, side table, and bookshelf) for $1,500. The company also claims the set can be put together—without tools—in minutes, then easily disassembled and reassembled for future moves.
The catch? Orders won’t ship until February 2016—but if you preorder by the end of this year, you’ll lock in the lower price. (The living room set’s regular price is $1,800.)
Still, if you can’t wait until next year, consider ye olde department store, Macy’s. Now before you judge, know that the retailer stocks an unexpectedly large inventory of styles and color palettes—many in the Mid-Century Modern vein that Ikea nails—and their sales can’t be beat. High-quality, full-size sofas such as the one below go for under $650.

For home accents …

If you’ve got furniture covered but are looking for some plush, one-of-a-kind accents, Home Decorators Collection might be your ticket. Add a little warmth to hard angles and modern edges with a Moroccan pouf (below, $129), entryway bench, or trio of mirrors. We guarantee visitors will ask where you found your pieces. And yes, prices are excellent.

For knickknacks …

If you love Ikea for its bright bursts of color and happy patterns, then meet Flying Tiger. Items from canisters to hand towels to laundry baskets (below for $7 each) offer up interesting color palettes, textures, or designs. Bonus: It also stocks loads of fun office accessories to stylishly organize that overflowing pile of papers you call a desk.

For the kitchen …

The fab new site Snowe Home clears away the noise in the kitchen space. Clean, chic, timeless, goes-with-everything plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, carafes, and mugs are sold piecemeal or in bundles—like the 16-piece set of Limoges porcelain, below, for $240—so you can phase it in or replace everything at once. While the prices aren’t exactly bargain basement, the quality is high and pieces are designed to last a lifetime.

For rugs …

Have you heard of a little online gem called Cost Plus World Market? Aside from the dozens of categories we shop regularly, the rug department is our favorite. High-quality rugs such as the blue sapphire area, below, cost about $29 to $499, based on size. Braided cotton, tufted wool, and natural jute options all ring up for the price of a runner elsewhere.

For lighting …

The quickest way to refresh your place? A new light fixture can do wonders. Dot & Bo knows that, and stocks all sorts of options, from old-school vintage sconces to Mid-Century Modern pendants such as this one for $45. Most are significantly discounted, which makes buying in multiples a little easier on the wallet.

For storage …

Sometimes dubbed the “Japanese Ikea,” Muji rivals its Scandinavian cousin in prices and lifestyle categories, but it really shines in the storage department. Cool corrugated boxes, sleek acrylic desk containers (like the ones below, starting at $12), and bright-and-shiny metal bins store all of the messy extras all over the house—and make it look like it all belongs there. - Realtor
