Moving Tips | After a long day of moving, it can be hard to imagine having to unpack everything just to find a shower curtain so you can finally take a shower. The next time you move, plan ahead and pack a first night box filled with the essentials you’ll need right away.
These items can range from normal toiletries and first aid supplies to take-out menus and DVDs. Anything you’ll need for your first night in a new home should be packed in your first night box.
1. Clothes
Whether you moved across the country or across town, much of your wardrobe is likely packed away in a box somewhere that you just won’t feel like rifling through immediately after your move. If you know that you’ll be without your clothes for a while, instead of reaching for a fig leaf to cover up, pack a few days’ worth of clothes in your first night box. And don’t forget your pajamas!
2. Electronics
Your cellphone and laptop may be packed separately for quick access after you move in, but are the chargers and cables nearby?
Other items to consider packing with your electronics:
- Alarm clock
- Portable DVD player and DVDs
- Nightlight/flashlights
3. Toiletries
Being able to shower and relax after a tough day of lifting boxes, driving and cleaning can go a long way toward making you feel at home.
Along with your normal toiletries, don’t forget to pack these bathroom essentials:
- Toilet paper
- Towels
- Shower curtain, shower rod and curtain rings
- First aid kit and medications
4. Air mattress
If you’ve made a long-distance move, your items may not arrive for a few days or even weeks depending on the moving company. Instead of sleeping on the floor, bring an air mattress for those first few nights and save your back some unneeded pain. Don’t forget to pack a set of sheets and pillows.
5. Eating utensils
Packing disposable plates and cutlery will prevent you from having to unpack your dishes and cups at the end of a long moving day. If you forget to pack disposable plates, don’t worry – whichever take-out restaurant you order from can likely put a few in with your order. Other items you may need want to put in the box:
- Take-out menus
- Antibacterial wipes and cleaning wipes
- Garbage bag
When packing your first night box, make sure the box will stand out from the others on the truck or in your car. A plastic tote can do the trick and will likely be a sturdier option that you can use again for your next move. Keep in mind you can use multiple boxes if you need to, just as you would with any other box, don’t pack it too heavy.
While this list may seem like a lot, the box’s contents will vary depending on your needs. Your first night in a new home should be spent relaxing and getting comfortable in your new surroundings, the first night box will just help you get settled that much sooner. - Redfin
