I'm sure you can agree, moving can be expensive. But there are ways you can save money when hiring moving companies or renting a moving truck for your move.
To start, you should decide what option is best for you: to move yourself or to hire a moving company. You may think you know the answer, but the cost can vary greatly on how far you're moving and what kind of time you have, not to mention the physical labor involved. The cost of gas and one-way rentals can be very expensive. Make sure to do a cost analysis to find the true answer.
If you do use a moving company, there are several ways to cut-down on your costs. Some of these tips can also apply to renting a truck.
- Purge before you pack. Go through your things and get rid of stuff you don't need. Hold a yard sale, leave old books with friends or donate them to the local library or sell them to a used bookstore. Anything you can't sell, give to a local charity. Weight equals money. The less weight, the less money.
- Book in advance. The sooner you book your mover, the less likely you are to be charged a higher rate. If you're have to move last minute and have to book movers within a couple of weeks of moving, they may charge you more money simply for the inconvenience of slotting in your move. This isn't always the case, but my golden rule is always book early if you can.
- Moving companies will nickel and dime you. Ask about all possible charges and fees. You may get charged for accessories, blankets, heavy items, moving appliances, etc.
- Pack up yourself. Moving companies usually charge extra if they have to help pack last minute items. Having everything ready to go will ensure that the time the movers spend with you is minimal. Disassembling furniture helps as well.
